At lunch today I received a call from the oncologist who wanted to update us on the lab work for Nathan. Back at the end of last month we were told that his AFP (and I’m still not sure on those letters) was very high. This high number was expected because the tumor was composed of liver cells (a guess at the time).

When she talked with me today she told me that his numbers had dropped down to 3,700! That is a significant drop, the implication is that his tumor is quickly dying. While this is very good news and she was very excited about this, she wanted me to understand that this didn’t change anything about his treatment. The expectation now is that when he has his surgery this number will drop down to 0.

On another note, since Nathan’s numbers were to low to start his second cycle the day before, assuming he is well enough he will start tomorrow. Since the subsequent treatments are 7 days after his first treatment is over, this would put them on a Saturday. She will move his subsequent treatments to be on Friday and doesn’t anticipate this being a problem.
